Vasectomy Treatment Process
The medical term “vasectomy” refers to a sterilization procedure for men in which the vas deferens (the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles to the semen) are cut or sealed. By blocking the sperm passage, a vasectomy prevents pregnancy. The procedure is safe, effective, and does not affect your sexual life, hormones, libido, or ejaculation. After the procedure, your semen no longer contains sperm, making vasectomy a reliable, permanent form of contraception.
01. Preparation
A vasectomy is a minor surgical procedure. A diagnostic consultation will first take place with your urologist, after which your appointment will be scheduled in the outpatient operating room (OPR).
Important: If you are taking blood thinners, inform your urologist, the admissions office, and the anesthetist in advance. You will need to stop taking these medications before the procedure. More information can be found in the information leaflet “Prostate Examination: Saturation Biopsy.” If you have not stopped in time, the surgery may need to be postponed.
02. The Procedure
The vasectomy is a simple and minimally invasive procedure performed under local anesthesia in the outpatient setting.
On the day of your appointment:
- You will be welcomed by a nurse, who will guide you through the process and explain what will happen.
- During the procedure, both vas deferens are cut and sealed by the urologist, blocking the passage of sperm and rendering you sterile.
The procedure typically takes no more than 30 minutes and is nearly painless due to the local anesthesia. Some patients may experience a pulling sensation in the groin, as the vas deferens pass through the inguinal canal.
Our urologists use dissolvable stitches that disappear on their own within two weeks, meaning they do not need to be removed.
03. After the Procedure
You are not immediately sterile after the procedure. In the first few months following the surgery, sperm may still be present in your semen. During this period, it is essential to continue using contraception to prevent pregnancy.
- It takes at least 15 to 20 ejaculations for sperm to be cleared from the semen, which typically takes 3 to 4 months.
- A follow-up sperm analysis will be done to confirm that your semen is sperm-free. You should only stop using contraception after receiving confirmation that no sperm remains.
04. Going Home
You can go home immediately after the procedure. Gauze dressings will be placed on both incision sites, and it is important to wear a tight-fitting undergarment (such as briefs or swim trunks) for 3 days and nights to provide extra support.
To prevent bleeding, avoid strenuous physical activity for the rest of the day.
- The following morning, you can remove the dressing and take a shower.
- Avoid bathing or swimming for 5 days after the procedure to allow the wounds to heal properly.
- Follow these instructions carefully for a smooth and comfortable recovery.
05. Aftercare
A wound check-up with your urologist is not necessary after the procedure. You will receive clear instructions for submitting a semen sample to verify that there are no remaining sperm cells. This fertility test is an essential step in confirming that the procedure has been successful.
