Treatment Process

The knee joint plays a crucial role in enabling free movement, walking, standing, and everyday mobility. Your doctor has determined that the pain you’re experiencing is caused by osteoarthritis or cartilage damage. To help alleviate this pain, we offer hyaluronic acid injections. This treatment is particularly suitable for patients who have not experienced sufficient relief from painkillers, exercises, or physiotherapy. Hyaluronic acid injections can be an alternative to surgery or other medication-based treatments.

Hyaluronic acid is a substance that naturally occurs in the human body, particularly in joint tissue and synovial fluid. This naturally produced hyaluronic acid acts as a lubricant and shock absorber in healthy joints. Osteoarthritis can reduce this function, and in such cases, hyaluronic acid injections may provide relief.

At CliniX, we use a highly concentrated sodium hyaluronate solution for the injections, which is administered directly into the knee joint.

  • The doctor will administer one injection of hyaluronic acid into the affected joint.
  • A single injection is often sufficient to reduce pain and improve mobility for up to 6 months in patients with knee osteoarthritis.

You can schedule an appointment for this treatment with the orthopedics outpatient clinic by calling: (075) 6502105.

The primary goal of the injection is to reduce joint pain. The duration and level of pain relief can vary from patient to patient.

For the first 48 hours after the injection, avoid activities such as jogging, tennis, heavy lifting, and prolonged standing.

Please note that this treatment is not always successful for all patients. If the injection provides relief, it can be repeated as needed.

Hyaluronic acid should not be used if:

  • You have an infection or skin condition near the injection site.
  • You are allergic to hyaluronic acid or related products.
  • You are pregnant, breastfeeding, or the patient is a child, as the safety and effectiveness have not been studied for these groups.

The most common side effects (reported in more than 4% of patients) include:

  • Sterile inflammation of the knee, causing significant pain for up to 1 week (occurs in 25% of patients).
  • Joint pain without visible inflammation.
  • Back pain.
  • Headaches.
  • Pain or other reactions at the injection site.
  • Non-specific pain.
  • Allergic reactions are extremely rare.

Injections should only be administered by a qualified physician or Physician Assistant and must be given directly into the joint.

Effectiveness Timeline

Allow at least 3 months for the treatment to show optimal results. A follow-up appointment can be scheduled at the orthopedics outpatient clinic if necessary.

Your doctor will discuss the various options available to help manage your pain caused by osteoarthritis or cartilage issues.

Common alternatives include:

  • Avoiding activities that increase joint pain.
  • Exercises and physiotherapy to strengthen the joint and improve mobility.
  • Medication options, such as:
    • NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac) for pain relief and inflammation.
    • COX-2 inhibitors (e.g., Movicox, Celebrex) for more targeted anti-inflammatory effects.
    • Injections with lidocaine (for local anesthesia) and cortisone (a powerful anti-inflammatory).

In recent years, there has also been interest in supplements such as glucosamine and chondroitin, although their effectiveness varies.

Since the cost-effectiveness of this treatment has not been sufficiently demonstrated according to insurance standards, this treatment is not covered by health insurance.

CliniX offers the treatment for patients referred by the orthopedics department at the Zaans Medical Center at a rate of €185 per injection.
